Welcome to my family blog. I have been married to Mike for over half of my life. I love my Savior, Jesus. I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom to six terrific, interesting children. My 3 oldest were born to me in my younger years, while my 3 youngest were given to me by God in my older years. I am very blessed. ~Cheri

Friday

Ivy must have an internal alarm clock set for 6:30 a.m.  I don't, though.  Today was my first visit to Starbucks.  I'm not a fan, but wanted a latte.  I'm glad I went.  There was a guest book there for people to write in.  I brought it to the table for Ivy to look at or write in.  She wrote some things, and went through and read to me in Chinese, giggling all the way.  It was so sweet, but I hope she wasn't reading really bad things!  It was the first time she talked that much to me.

We took a taxi to the zoo, about 25 minutes away.  Five minutes before we arrived, Ivy vomited all over herself, the seat, the floor.  (Seth did the same thing in 2007.)  I believe it was just motion sickness because she seemed fine later.  She had so much vomit on her sweater that I had to throw it away in the trash can at the zoo.  A Chinese lady saw me do this.  Then she motioned/told me that Ivy needed something to wear.  Picture me doing charades, making the vomiting sounds and motions.  Then she shook her head as if to understand, saying Ooohhhh.  I gave Ivy my jacket, and I cleaned her off the best I could with a pack of tissues.  I had her regurgitation under my fingernails.  It was not pretty, but I was determined to have a good time.  Just 15 short minutes later, Ivy slipped on the wet tile and started crying.  Poor thing.

For Joy, since she imitates a lion so well.

For Eva..because she likes for me to sing the giraffe song.

This work of art is made entirely of butterfly wings...kind of gross.

$1.00 for this huge bowl of noodles.  Ivy ate the whole thing.

After eating way too much at Cow and Bridge, we walked around the island a lot.  I needed some more exercise.  Ivy was walking on one side of a large Banyan tree, and I was walking on the other side.  I decided to play chase with her, around the tree.  When I peeked on the other side, I saw a frightened look on her face.  She thought I was gone.  Even though it caused her a second of panic, I saw the relief in her face when she saw me again.  It made me realize that she is trusting and liking me more every day.

Under the new Hague regulations, children over 2 years of age have to have a TB skin test.  Ivy had hers yesterday.  Today it does not look good.  I'm thinking that she will have to have an X-ray tomorrow when we go to have it checked.  My doctor told me that since Chinese children are vaccinated against TB (isn't that the BCG Vaccine?) they will likely test positive on the skin test.  Any opinions out there from those who've done this recently?  How does it look?

Mine looked similar and it was negative..so I'm hoping for good news.
*Ivy loves bubblebaths.
*She laughs at herself when she sings.  I try to encourage her to sing, but I think she's embarrassed.
*She found another rhinestone shirt in the back of the drawer and had to wear it today, after vomiting on her other clothes.
*Ivy pocketed the tip money I left for the waiter at Cow and Bridge.  She showed it to me 2 shops later.  Blame it on the language barrier.
*She looks at her pictures from the orphanage and does not cry at all, but names everyone off and laughs at the boys.
*She grins really big when I tuck her in bed at night and tell her I love her in Chinese.

10 kind words:

Bobby and Regina

She is so beautiful! I hate that she got sick, but since she ate so well, I'm sure it was just car sickness. Can't wait to see you all at home, and meet her in person! Love, Regina

Ashley

I do not know about the TB results. Grant did have a little red mark - Is it raised?

Praying for the least amount of medical encounters! Love the pocketing the money - she is such a precious little girl! I cannot imagine how excited she was to see how pleased you were with her during the meal.

Blessings! Ashley

Hi Cheri,
What an adventure you guys are having. You guys are really having a great time of "bonding". You can see the light in Ivy's face that she is more relaxed. She is a love bug for sure. You know Ivy and Lily are very close in age. Lily is 6 soon to be 7 in April. Lily is a tiny princess, too weighing about 36 pounds. It will be great to see Lily and Ivy together. They just might really become great friends. Lily has been following your blog with me. She said a what a cutie-pie she is ...When will she be home? Take care and we are praying for you all-
love-

Mommy

We wanted to go to the zoo but never made it there. Bless her heart. I'll be praying for the plane ride. Ugh! Pack lots of extra clothes Momma. ;-) As for the TB, it is hard to tell without measuring it. Be prepared for the xray jik. Take care and can't wait to read the update from tomorrow.

Sleep well!

Oh I remember visiting the zoo while in China!! We had to laugh at the dogs which were caged!

Poor thing being sick but I am so glad that she is trusting you more and more. It sounds like you are really bonding together. She is such a little sweetheart!

Continuing to pray, especially about the TB result.

Hi Cheri,
I'm so sorry that I didn't leave a comment yesterday. I most certainly did not miss out on reading your blog and looking at your pictures! We had our Orphan Ministry Meeting last night and prayed for the remainder of your trip. We were all talking about how amazing this event has been! We've all enjoyed watching as the days go by! Also had a very small playgroup here yesterday and we also were talking about your blog - all of us with tears in our eyes. Also read the poem to my friends you have on your site about going to get the babies while the older child watched. Also teared up over that too!
We will pray about the TB test....wish I had helpful info on that - but don't.
It's so great to hear about her giggling spells! She is so darned sweet!!!
And oh my.....your girls back home...their hair!!! YIKES!!!! I've had one child do that - but he's a boy. As adventuresome as Emma is - I'm sure the temptation of cutting her hair at some point will not pass her by!
Looking forward to reading your blogs through the snow over the next day! Thought of Ivy - that she may not get to experience snow until next year. Has been a great year for snow! Hopefully she'll get to see at least one decent snowfall when she gets back!
Have a wonderful sleep!! We'll be praying while you're sleeping.
The popcorn story was so funny! Glad she's ok too! :)
God Bless Cheri!

Wow, will be praying about the TB test. Its' probably fine.
I'm glad she is loving her mommy. Sweet, sweet. It's so cute that she is talking and giggling in Chinese.

Cheri

Praying the TB test is nothing.

I am so glad things are going better for you and Ivy. She is beautiful! I love hearing all about her. Won't be long and you'll be heading home and I'll be heading out!

Avery's TB spot was a light-medium red for 2 weeks. It was still red after we returned home and went to our Pedi a week later. The main thing to look at is not the redness, but is it swollen and harden. That shows a positive TB test, no the redness. Usually the hardened, swollen spot has to be over like 8mm for it to be positive. Will keep ya'll in my thoughts!

A family I follow on anohter blog went just before Christmas to get their two sons. One did have a positive TB test and had to have x-rays. The x-rays showed no TB, and they had an extra large envelope to add with the others when going through customs. I think they also had to schedule an appointment with their doctor within a certain period of time once returning home.
