Welcome to my family blog. I have been married to Mike for over half of my life. I love my Savior, Jesus. I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom to six terrific, interesting children. My 3 oldest were born to me in my younger years, while my 3 youngest were given to me by God in my older years. I am very blessed. ~Cheri

History

I am so fortunate to live in a state that is full of history.  Sadly, I do not take advantage of it often enough.  I mentioned before that I teach a high school history class at our home school co op.  Last week, a group went to on a field trip to our capital and Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello.

I didn't know before our field trip that Thomas Jefferson designed our state capital building.  He sent the designs to Virginia while he was in France as Ambassador.  He wanted marble columns, but Virginia has no marble.  Those columns are really trees covered in stucco.  And, apparently, the building did not turn out as he expected.

Thomas Jefferson

Our tour was full of interesting historical facts, and I enjoyed it tremendously.

John Smith and Pocohontas  (Not lovers regardless of what Disney says)

Very dramatic painting of the Battle of Yorktown.  The artist (which I fail to remember) painted all the men with faces of George Washington, while adding his own likeness to one of the men.

One of the copies of the Declaration of Independence

Old elevator not in use

 George Washington's statue

One interesting fact about this room is the black and white floor.  The black tiles are granite from Vermont.  They show fossils all through them.  Can you guess the creatures?

 Part of our group

We later headed across the street to this beautiful church.  There was some significant detail about this, but I forgot it too.  I was thinking it was where Patrick Henry gave his lively speech, but my friend, Amy, reminded me it was a different church.  Maybe this is where all the governors attended?

An organ player was inside playing magnificently.  I can't imagine working that huge organ.

Next we headed to Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Recognize the picture from the nickel?

I was not allowed to take any inside pictures.  The house was beautiful and quite interesting.  Thomas Jefferson was an extremely intelligent man.  All of this is nothing without a Savior.  He failed to see that truth.

The Rocks

Not the rocks you are probably thinking of....

Our friends from Illinois came for a visit and it rained almost every day.  So, we ended up at a rock wall one afternoon.  The good thing...we are home-schoolers and had the whole place to ourselves.  Nice.  I wasn't sure if Joy would be able to do much climbing with her little hand...but as usual, she proved herself with an inverted wall.

The place was pretty large, and I think the kids had a good time even though their arms and legs were noodles by the time we left.  Eva had a hard time, initially.  She just could not bring herself to let go and repel down the wall.  Instead, she wanted to climb down.  After 30 minutes and a lot of tears, she made it.  After a bit, I took her around the corner and practiced short repels with her.  Eventually, she made it to the top.  She wasn't going to let that wall get the best of her!

Our Gang

I loved this sign at the rock wall.

Onto soccer.  Jack has his last game tomorrow.  Ivy and Eva finished last week.  As much as I love watching my kids play soccer, I am looking forward to the break.  Between, piano, violin, 2 soccer leagues, co-op, schooling, and a traveling husband, I was running out of steam.

Funny picture with Jack in the middle.

Speaking of soccer...my handsome husband was traveling to New York last month.  Upon entering his hotel lobby, he spotted the US Women's soccer team.  He didn't hesitate to have his picture snapped with best and prettiest player, Alex Morgan.

He and his co-worker ended up going to the stadium to watch them play that night...while I was home in Virginia taking my kids to soccer, cooking dinner, washing dishes, washing clothes, cleaning house..............

He met Kirk Cameron on a flight once, but didn't get his picture taken with him.  Just an observation. I probably would have.

Hello?

I know, I know.  I haven't been a faithful blogger.  I always think about posting something, but life gets in the way.  I know you know what I am talking about.  I am busy.  Our life is full of something almost every single day.  And, on the rare occasion when we are free....all I want to do is sit at home.

I always have a lot of things on my mind.  More than I can write.  I think about my grown children and when/if they will make me a grandmother any time in the near future.  Not that I want to be one too soon.  But, I'd sure prefer they both live closer to me when that time comes.  I think about how quickly life is flying by and the yuck going on in the world.  I think about how patient and merciful God is during all the chaos and confusion  I think about how glad I am that I live in a time and place where I can home school my children even though at times it is very hard. I am blessed.  I am so very blessed.

In August, we started back to school.  We are continuing our co-op, and it keeps us very, very busy. The girls are taking Astronomy (not astrology), History, PE, English, Young Missionaries Literature.  Jack takes Computer, World History, Physical Science, American Literature.  I do not teach in any of my children's classes and I like that to some extent.  But, I still have to teach them these classes throughout the week.  I teach high school American History again this year.  I am also teaching a 5th grade social studies class.  I really enjoy getting to know all the kids I teach.  It is a lot of fun.  It is also a lot of work.  Some things I am learning right along with my kids.

Three of my children play soccer.  The girls play on one league; Jack plays on a more competitive travel team.  Many of the games are played on the same night, different locations and sometimes even different cities.  So, Mike and I are missing someone's game each week.  Sometimes it gets tricky when Mike is out of town.

Yesterday Eva celebrated her birthday.  It was also the anniversary of the day we met.  I still remember that day so clearly and how I felt when they handed me this beautiful stranger and said she was mine.  How did I get so lucky?  I'm her mom.  At times I feel so unworthy to be a mom.  But, God let me do it anyway.

Speaking of Eva...she is still taking violin lessons and doing well.  She had her first group lesson yesterday.  I made her wear something other than camouflage.  Somehow it just looked weird seeing her playing classical music in her camos.

Mike and Jack left the house this morning before the sun was even up.  All day soccer.  Yay.  So, the girls and I had the whole day to ourselves.  It started off rainy, but ended being very nice.  I have the windows open listening to the crickets and bull frogs from the pond.  After running errands, the girls were outside a lot.

I never know what I am going to find when I walk outside.  Many times Mike will come in the house and say, "Cheri, did you know the girls were......?"  Today they found mushrooms growing in the yard and decided to stuff them with pretty leaves off the pear trees.

I'm not even sure what to make of this stuff on my patio table.  It looks kind of sketchy, though.  Black powder, leaves, berries which look like pills, and of course, the even present knife.  Nearby, I found Eva's bag of goodies.  After six years, she still carries bags packed with "stuff".  At least she has toned it down a bit and can carry the bag instead of dragging it.

Contents:  Hand-shaped notepad, journal, Jordan's old wallet, tissues, old cell phone, magnifying glass, used caps, pencils, pin light, MY SCOTCH TAPE.  Now I know where it went.

Ivy gets in on some of the action at times.  She isn't the pack rat that Eva is.  But, she does enjoying cutting up some wild berries and pretend to make things.

Ivy is a big help in the kitchen.  I can always count on her to help me out with dinner and the clean-up.  She enjoys it.  I can even say that she thrives in that environment.  We had a fun time fixing dinner this evening.

Goofing off a little bit

So, while we worked ourselves in the kitchen, I found this going on in the living room.

Joy just isn't very strong in her left hand and has to use her feet to "cock" the Nerf gun.  Their target?

They set up the stool.  Fun times.

Mid-September....it feels like fall.  There are fallen leaves in our yard already.  The air is cool.  I'm sure it will be warm again very soon.  It always is.  One thing I hate about fall?  These things:

Well, I wouldn't say I hate them.  I hate that I buy them, eat 5 handfuls, feel sick, then say I'll never eat another one again.  I just can't resist them.

Refugees + Soccer

The city has a refugee community of Bhutanese/Nepalis.  We have many people from our church who work with the refugee community.  The refugee children love soccer.  They practice weekly and even have their own jerseys.  Needless to say they are pretty good.  Our local home-school soccer league has been getting together (as an outreach) to play soccer with them.  Jack participated recently on a hot Saturday morning.

We're the hodge-podged jersey team.

Maybe we lost because we didn't practice as a team....or didn't have matching jerseys.

But, the point was to have a good time.  And they skunked us...pretty badly.  No need to tell you the score.

Eva got tired of watching and headed off to play her own game of soccer with her buddy.

Kids = Mess

There is no doubt that I cannot have a consistently clean home and have children at the same time.  Don't get me wrong...I don't mind.  I'd much rather have these crazy kiddos of mine and a dirty house than life without them.  Sometimes I just have to laugh at the messes they make.

I have numerous broken picture frames from the days when Seth and Jack played soccer inside during the winter months.  I also have broken lights on the outside of the house from flying soccer balls.  I'm sure this is not unknown to all you mothers out there, but here is my most common and annoying sweet memories from my messy kids:

Bug guts splattered on cathedral ceiling
Stickers on bed
Names of famous soccer players carved into the headboard of a child's bed
Glue on freshly painted wall so children can hang artwork (never mind they have a cork board for that purpose)
Ink from broken pen splattered on wall
Vomit splattered on wall
Other bodily stuff on wall
Dirty windows because they can't keep their hands or faces off

They can all be cleaned up.  The work is never ending.  And years later, some of the carvings memories still remain.  One famous one:

Jack wrote his name in permanent marker on the side of our couch.  At least it was red and matched the living room.  The kind man who was recovering our furniture saved it for me.  I'm sure it deserves to be framed and hung somewhere prominent.

This brings me to my latest re-do.  We bought a new table before we even thought about adding to our family through adoption.  I made the mistake of buying fabric covered chairs.  Seth spilled soy sauce that first night we used it.  I wanted to cry.  Then we adopted.  Over the years I placed a covering over the fabric...

because it looked like this...

Yes, it was embarrassing.  But this weekend, I broke down and bought some fabric.  Hindsight, I should have bought industrial fabric instead of the indoor/outdoor.  It was much easier than I thought, and I am pleased with the results.

Let's see how long it lasts....

Water Fun

All kids love smoke bombs, right?  There is something alluring about that thick, colorful, sulfur-smelling smoke.  Apparently, dogs enjoy them, too.

But, I don't think they tasted great.

Mike bought the girls water guns this week.  It is an understatement to say they enjoy them very much.

Eva and Ivy showed no mercy.  Joy just tried to shoot without looking.  No need risking getting shot in the face by an unmerciful sister.

Joy then decided to  to do more serious things with her new water gun...

...like spray smoke bombs...

...or rinse off the car.  That seems pretty safe.

It's safe to say she will always be the baby of the family.

And just because he was a handsome bystander (who still had bedhead at 4:00 pm)...

Happy 4th of July!
